What are the new federal student loan borrowing limits for graduate students after July 1st, 2026?

Starting July 1, 2026: 

  • Graduate students: Up to $20,500 per year, $100,000 total
  • Professional students (e.g., law, med): Up to $50,000 per year, $200,000 total
  • Grad PLUS loans: Eliminated—no federal option to borrow beyond these caps
